Santa Cruz Chefs’ Dinner raises 800,000 meals for Food For Children program

Second Harvest Food Bank hosted it’s annual Chefs’ Dinner on Sept. 12, 2019.  This signature event which includes a Six-course meal prepared by some of Santa Cruz County’s finest Chefs, a live and silent auction, wine paring, and a large anonymous match, raised the enough money to provide more than 800,000 meals for the Food For Children program.

The event is one of Second Harvest’s biggest fundraisers of the year.  Held at the Holy Cross Annex in Santa Cruz, this year on one of the hottest days of the year, the event was a huge success with a sold-out crowd

The award-winning Food For Children program is in its 21st year of providing year-round fresh produce, nutrition education, and CalFresh assistance to children and families each month at 50 sites around Santa Cruz County.

Featured chefs were Peter Henry of The Cremer House, Ella King of Ella’s at the Airport, Steve Wilson of Café Cruz, Jeffrey Wall of Alderwood Santa Cruz, Brad Briske of Home and Anthony Kresge of Chef Anthony.

This event is the biggest single source of funding for Second Harvest’s award-winning Food For Children program.

“As chefs, we frequently serve people who can afford to go out for a nice meal on a regular basis,” stated Chef Steve Wilson, who started the event in 2001. “We are personally affected, though, by the knowledge that there are many in our community who cannot even afford the most basic necessities… This is our way of giving back.”

Second Harvest is so thankful to all the donors, volunteers, chefs and sponsors that participated in  Thursday’s event.

Good nutrition is a necessity for children to succeed in school and in life.
