CalFresh Changes – June 1, 2026
Your county and community, working together to keep you healthy and nourished.
You are not alone. We are here to help you GET and KEEP your BENEFITS.
To do this, Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County is working together with other community-based organizations to help keep you healthy and nourished. We know there have been many recent changes and conversations around SNAP/CalFresh, and many families may be unsure about what support is still available.
The good news is that SNAP/CalFresh benefits are still available and continue to help individuals and families buy healthy food each month. If grocery costs have become difficult, we encourage you to reach out, ask questions, and see if you qualify. Even if you were denied before, your situation may be different now. Our team is here to help guide you through the process.

Timing Matters
After June 1, 2026, new applicants may be screened right away.
Current recipients will usually be screened at their next recertification or renewal after June 1, 2026 — not everyone will see immediate changes.
Changes to CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements
The federal government’s rules on CalFresh work requirements are changing. Starting June 1, 2026, under these new federal rules, certain people will have to meet CalFresh work and community engagement requirements to get or keep their CalFresh benefits.
These rules apply to you if you:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 64 (previously 18–54)
- Do not have a disability
- Do not have a dependent child in your home under 14 years old (previously 18 years old)
Some people may be excused from these rules.
What is the ABAWD Work Requirement and what does it mean for me?
These rules are often called:
- ABAWD rules (“Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents”)
- Work and Community Engagement Requirements
The ABAWD work requirement applies to you if you:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 64 years old
- Do not have a dependent child under 14 years old
- Are considered physically and mentally able to work at least 20 hours per week
- Are not excused from the rule
If the ABAWD work requirement applies to you, you will need to have a job, volunteer, or be enrolled in school or a job training program. If you’re working, you must work an average of 20 hours each week or earn $217.50 per week before taxes.
If you’re in school or a training program, you must have total class time of 20 hours each week or be enrolled at least half-time.
If you do not meet this requirement, you will only be able to get CalFresh benefits for three months over a three-year period.
Additionally, some CalFresh recipients who were previously excused from these rules will now also have to meet work requirements to continue to get CalFresh benefits unless they can be excused for a different reason.
This new group may include CalFresh recipients who are:
- Aged 55–64 years old
- Parents whose youngest child is 14 or older
- Experiencing homelessness
- Veterans
- Currently or were in foster care on their 18th birthday
