Good Deeds Unmasked

By July 8, 2020 No Comments

The people of Santa Cruz County continue to reach out to help their community as the Covid-19 situation continues to change daily.  Malia Nacht is a 12 year old student who attends the bi-lingual immersion program at Alianza Charter School in Watsonville. She is a perfect example of someone who found a way to help while sheltering at home. She decided to make masks.

Malia learned how to hand sew a few small projects before schools transitioned to distance learning. She did not own a sewing machine and did not know how to use one. A family friend heard of Malia’s desire to sew masks. They gifted her an amazing sewing machine AND taught her the basics of operating it.

Malia made a few masks for family and friends and eventually more people wanted them. Malia decided to charge $5/per mask and donate the money to Second Harvest to help feed people and to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help fight those diseases. She said…

“I could have bought some stuffed animals that I did not really need or I could donate the money to Second Harvest so people could have food.”

Second Harvest Food Bank can provide four meals for every dollar donated, at the time of this writing, Malia has already donated 835 healthy meals.

Thank you Malia!
