2008 Hunger Fighters of the Year
The 2008 Hunger Fighter of the Year awards are
Jane Hurlbut volunteer pantry manager of Valley Churches United Mission and Lourdes Cordova Assistant Director of Community Pantry of San Benito County.
Jane Hurlbut, 71 has given over 1,000 hours of service a year since joining Valley Churches United Mission as a volunteer in 1990. She started as a food bagger in the pantry program, was quickly promoted to client intake, and was appointed pantry manager in 1991.
Lourdes Cordova first became involved with Community Pantry in 1989 as a client in need of food, after she and her husband relocated with their six children from LA to Hollister to escape gang violence and was struggling with unemployment. She soon began volunteering, making time for home deliveries to seniors and early bread donation pick-ups while raising six children.
