Plantronics “Like” Campaign a Success

Earlier this summer Second Harvest teamed up with Plantronics to attract a larger following to our Facebook fan page. This page is where you can find short posts about our upcoming events, links to our blogs, and notices about how you can get involved in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. For each new fan, Plantronics donated 4 meals, up to 5,000 new fans. Thanks to Plantronics, we gained an astonishing 6,292 new fans and received the equivalent of 20,000 nutritious meals for our neighbors in need.

While the campaign may be over, we’re always interested in making new friends. If you know Facebook users who are interested in following the activities of the food bank, please feel free to refer them to the fan page, where they can click the ‘like’ button that is located to the right of “Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz” to receive our posts on their news feed. Thanks again to Plantronics and everyone who participated in this challenge!

Local Artist Restores Second Harvest Mural

Mardeen Gordon Repairs a Tear in the Mural

Last week, local embroiderer and Ben Lomond-based California Sign Group proprietor Mardeen Gordon repaired a large mural that has decorated Second Harvest’s warehouse for many years.

The mural shows workers in fields of fruits and vegetables as well as other colorful Watsonville-specific details. The painting was accidentally torn and so Gordon, who is a master embroiderer, first repaired the tear before restoring the paint. The mural was originally painted by Ralph D’Oliveira in 1979 when he was part of the Tortuga Patrol, a group of artists who were known for their role in the California Chicano movement. Another well-known painting by this group can be found in the Gilroy Apartments. Incidentally, Ralph and Mardeen were acquainted.

Mardeen’s restoration was recently covered by the Register-Pajaronian’s photographer Tarmo Hannula. More photos of her work on this project can be viewed here. Examples of Mardeen’s embroidery can be found here.

Thanks for bringing this beautiful painting back to life!
