A definite chill was in the air when fifty swimmers convened at Cowell’s Beach in Santa Cruz for the third annual Will Swim For Food fund-raiser on Saturday morning, December 15th. The air temperature hovered at 40 degrees and the mile long swim took place in water that was just 57 degrees.
With more people participating and getting sponsored this year, the event raised over twice what it did in 2011, raising $44,009 for food banks and pantries. Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County will receive $27,000 of the total amount. Since Second Harvest can provide four meals for every dollar raised, that amounts to over 116,000 meals.
There were swimmers from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties as well as Virginia and Oregon. We’re especially proud of our very own athletes, AmeriCorps volunteer, Jake Harder, and Brooke Johnson, Chief Operations and Programs Officer for Second Harvest. Way to go!
