Every year, the Operations Department of Second Harvest has the good fortune to welcome new AmeriCorps Members. AmeriCorps is an organization that provides thousands of Americans of all ages, abilities and backgrounds with intensive full- and part-time opportunities to serve their communities and help meet local environmental, educational, public safety, or other human needs. AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities annually through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups.
Adriana Zollo will be supporting the local agencies that distribute food from Second Harvest to people in need. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Adriana was working for a startup in San Francisco that helps entreprenuers and artists start their own businesses and was also involved with farmers markets through an organization in Marin County called AIM. She had the opportunity to visit Second Harvest and fell in love with the area and the people, as well as the idea of working with the food bank to help get healthy food to people. In addition to working with our agencies, Adriana will be offering a weekly yoga class to Second Harvest staff.
Jake Harder recently graduated from Pitzer College in Southern California and wanted to give back in some way. Jake is bilingual and his background in organic food and healthy cooking makes him a perfect fit for our Passion For Produce program. Jake says he is amazed by the amount of food that is distributed by Second Harvest and is happy to to have this opportunity use his Spanish and to help people.
Adora DaCosta-Muniz, a graduate of San Diego State University, majored in Public Health and recently worked as a health educator in Guatemala. She chose Second Harvest because she wanted to do something that would allow her to use the nutrition related knowledge she gained as part of her major. Like Jake, she is also excited to be able to use her Spanish and work with the Latin community.
Both Adora and Jake will be doing cooking demonstrations and nutrition presentations on-site at Passion For Produce locations throughout Santa Cruz County.
These young people are committed to making a difference in the world and we are looking forward to all the great things they will accomplish during their time with Second Harvest.
