A beautiful summer day, incredible locally grown fruits and vegetables, a delicious lunch prepared and served by Monterey Bay Teen Challenge, and Representative Sam Farr joining the Zumba class in our warehouse—our annual summer celebration had it all!
The plan for SummerFest was to show off the local farmers that donate food to Second Harvest and the staff and volunteers who run the programs that get that food to people in need. Our Nutrition Programs group demonstrated recipes, shared nutrition tips and offered tastings. Our CalFresh team provided information on their outreach efforts.
Representative Sam Farr presented Willy Elliott-McCrea with a Special Congressional Recognition in honor of his 25 years serving as CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County. “The only way we can accomplish our healthcare goals is by ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food,” said Farr. “The crops we grow here are shipped all over the world. Today we are celebrating what Second Harvest does better than anyone else, making sure this food is available to people in need in our community.”
Clearly moved as he accepted the award, Elliott-McCrea thanked Representative Farr and the entire community for their dedication to ending hunger and malnutrition.
Special thanks to the food donors that participated: Driscoll’s, S. Martinelli & Co., Happy Boy Farms, Lakeside Organic Gardens, Sun Valley Berries, Sunridge Farms, ALBA Organics, and Watsonville Coast Produce.
Thanks to our Operations team! They made this event a success by doing what they do best—managing relationships with our food donors and distributing over 8.3M pounds of food annually (more than half of which are fresh fruits and vegetables).
Thanks also to our Nutrition Programs and CalFresh Outreach teams for providing low-income families in our community with the information and tools to help them be healthy.
Thanks to everyone in our community for your support. You make good things happen!
