Richard Menefee of Saber Knives raised 960 meals by raffling off cookware during a lunchtime barbecue at Cruz Car Wash. Jeremy Lezin, owner of the car wash, manned the grill, providing a free lunch to customers that purchased raffle tickets.
Both of these men are longtime supporters of Second Harvest: Jeremy through his work on our Board of Trustees and Richard through his donation of equipment for our Passion For Produce program. The knives are put to steady use in cooking demonstrations and food tastings throughout Santa Cruz County.
Richard says, “I donate to Second Harvest primarily because hunger is something that knows no prejudice. My wife and I have been flat broke. We lived on tortillas and eggs for several months. We have been homeless, living in a car for a week, then staying with a friend for two months until we could scrap together enough money to secure a modest apartment.”
Thanks to Richard for sharing his story and providing meals for people in need in our community. Thanks also to Jeremy for providing the barbecue. Great teamwork!
