Holiday Events Raise Over 10,000 Meals

Adding 10,211 meals to our 2012 Holiday Food Drive goal of 3.5 million meals, the food and cash donations raised at holiday events are making a difference. In Santa Cruz, there was Snow Night and First Friday at the Museum of Art and History. In Watsonville, it was Snow Night and Holiday Traditions. The Aptos Tree Lighting also brought in its share of food and cash to help the less fortunate in our area.

These events are fun for the whole family and a great way to bring our community together.

At the Museum of Art and History (MAH), Second Harvest staff sold hot chocolate, strawberry and pineapple agua frescas, and pastries donated by Mana in Watsonville. Chips and freshly made salsa were provided at no charge. The museum was hopping with activities on every floor.

Next door, the Homeless Garden Project held a grand opening of their gift shop in its new location next to MAH. It’s a great place to do a little holiday shopping while supporting the efforts of the Homeless Garden Project.

This week, the fun will continue on Saturday with Movie Day at the Del Mar Theater, 1124 Pacific Avenue, 10:00 am. Bring the kids to see Finding Nemo and don’t forget to also bring some non-perishable food items for the barrels.

Or, head to Cowell’s Beach and cheer on the swimmers braving freezing water for a good cause. Will Swim for Food, Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, 9:00 am. Visit web site to sponsor a swimmer.

Thanks to everyone for your support!
