Food Helps Families Battling Cancer

Since 1998, Jacob’s Heart has been working to improve the quality of life for children with cancer by providing support to their families. Located in Watsonville, the organization supports parents and families of children with cancer in Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito and South Santa Clara Counties.

Jacob’s Heart joined Second Harvest’s agency network in November so they could provide fresh healthy food to families whose financial resources are being stretched. Thanks to the collaboration with Second Harvest, Jacob’s Heart is able to deliver bags of fresh groceries every other week to the doorsteps of more than 50 local families whose children are battling cancer.

In addition to alleviating the financial burden on families, the food eases the emotional and physical toll of parents by providing the simple comfort of a nutritious meal.

Jacob’s Heart shared the following letter from one of their parents with us and we want to share it with you. Your support of Second Harvest helps so many people in so many different ways.

Dear Jacob’s Heart,

I wanted you to know how grateful my family is for the bags of groceries. It has been a great blessing in our lives. It has blessed us with more time with our kids and relieved some of our financial burdens.

Since our son was diagnosed back in Dec of 2012, we have had to make trips to the hospital each week. When I am up at the hospital with my son, I simply cannot provide things for my family. Many of the responsibilities fall upon my husband to shop and prepare for meals. This can be tricky with his full time schedule. As you may know, taking 3 little girls to the store after a long day isn’t the easiest task.

We’ve appreciated having a couple of bags of groceries delivered to our doorstep. It feels heaven sent after a long, stressful day.  Even when I am home, I feel so grateful that I don’t have to take my son out and expose him to germs that can be harmful to his system. My husband & I can spend more time taking care of our kids instead of worrying about how to get to the store or what to prepare. On the weeks where Jacob’s Heart delivers some groceries, I feel so relieved to know my kids will some healthy food options and I didn’t have to stress about anything.

This service has also been a blessing for our family financially. We have tried very hard to remain debt free and live within our meals on a tight budget. But since my son’s diagnosis we’ve had to dip into our savings for simple yet unexpected things. When we go to the hospital, my son’s food is taken care of. But I have to spend money to buy food each day. Most of the time, these visits are very unexpected and can range from 2-14 days. It’s easy to go over our food budget when this happens. Having a little extra each week or two in groceries can help offset some of those out of pocket expenses. Every little bit helps.

Thank you so much for helping our little family. When I hear that knock on the door on Friday, and I see someone from Jacob’s Heart smiling back at me, my heart just swells with gratitude for those that have given so much for my family. I wish I could individually thank those who have given of their time, effort, and money to bless my family. Please let know how much we really appreciate their sacrifice with much appreciation,

Jeff, Zoie, Hyrum (8), Emilee (7), Ava Jane (3), and Caroline (2)
