Birdies for Charity, hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, is a fundraising program that has helped Northern California charities raise more than $1,200,000 over the past five years. The Pledge Drive and Matching Funds portion of the program, similar to a walk-a-thon, allows nonprofit organizations to involve their communities in a pledge drive based on the total number of birdies made by PGA TOUR professionals during the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. 100% of collected pledges go directly to the charity with an additional up to 20% match.
There is also a Charity Shoot-Out, which includes a closest-to-the pin competition. Travis Stevens, Club Champion at Seascape, was among 40 amateur golfers vying for the top 8 spots. On January 21st, at the Peter Hayes course at Pebble Beach, Stevens came in sixth, putting his shot just 2′ 6″ from the hole and earning Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County a $1,000 check.
On February 5th, Second Harvest was paired up with former San Francisco Giants great Will Clark and Giants booth announcer Dave Flemming, with $60,000 on the line. Although Second Harvest did not end up winning that day, an additional $1,300 raised during the campaign brought the total to $2300 and close to 10,000 meals.
Thank you to everyone involved in this great event.
