After wrapping up a busy Holiday Food Drive, it was time for some team building at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. What a fun day it turned out to be. Riding the bumper cars, playing laser tag, miniature golf, and the arcade games—and that was just the morning.
During lunch we celebrated birthdays and anniversaries and got a status report from our Operations group. Here are a few highlights:
• Year-to-date, we have distributed 31% more produce than we did during the same time period last fiscal year, totalling 3,027,499 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables delivered from July 2011 through January 2012.
• In February 2011, we eliminated handling and delivery fees to our agencies, which has increased their ability to distribute healthy food to hungry people in their communities. In fact, the amount of pounds handled through our Agency Distribution Center is up 23% over the same period last year.
• We certified five new Passion For Produce sites since July 2011 and will add four more by July 2012, for a grand total of twenty. In January 2012, 50,409 pounds of food were distributed through Passion For Produce, a 27%, increase over January 2011.
Among the anniversaries was one of the unsung heroes of Second Harvest, Miguel, the driver for the Food For Children program. For five years he has delivered food throughout Santa Cruz County and is so devoted to the program and its clients that he won’t take a day off if it means missing one of his sites. Thanks to Miguel for inspiring all of us with his hard work and commitment to Food For Children.
After lunch we bowled a couple of games at the Boardwalk Bowl and called it a day. Thanks to everyone at the Seaside Company for generously donating their services and taking such good care of us all day. It was a blast.
