A huge truck pulled up to the warehouse Thursday with two tons of Smart Chicken donated by New Leaf Community Markets and MBA Poultry. The chicken is being distributed to hungry people throughout Santa Cruz County via pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens. These chickens and the winter veggies that are also available now—carrots, potatoes, onions, and greens—will provide a lot of healthy meals.
The donation is part of MBA Poultry’s Smart Giving program. For every ten pounds of air-chilled Smart Chicken bought by New Leaf customers in November, one pound was donated to Second Harvest as designated by New Leaf. The chicken delivered to Second Harvest on Thursday represented a 49 percent increase compared to last year.
“Since meat is our most expensive food item to purchase for our 200 member agencies and programs, we couldn’t be happier with this donation,” said Willy Elliott-McCrea, Chief Executive Officer, Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County.
New Leaf and MBA Poultry also donated 1.3 tons to Second Harvest locations in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Since 2006, New Leaf and MBA Poultry have donated 13.3 tons of chicken to Second Harvest.
Thank you New Leaf and MBA Poultry for your ongoing generosity and commitment to strengthening our community!
